Ginger, a root with a long history

Due to its unique aroma and flavor, many cultures adopted ginger as an essential ingredient in their gastronomy. Therefore, there are areas where it is very common to consume it.

The use of this root has a long history. It is known that a lot has been used in the Asian continent since ancient times for various purposes, not only culinary, but also medicinal.

Dioscorides, author of the work De Materia Medica, physician, pharmacologist and botanist, described ginger as a food that: “has the virtue of heating and digesting. It softens the belly slightly, and it is very pleasant to the stomach ”. 

After being investigated for decades, it was revealed that, through its consumption, it contributes to the body significant amounts of fiber and gingerol. This is the active compound that gives it its characteristic spicy flavor.

Benefits of ginger and cinnamon tea

Ginger and cinnamon tea is a hot drink with a slightly spicy flavor, which is prepared by infusing a small slice of ginger root and a cinnamon stick.

It will help to warm up easily during the coldest months of the year and, additionally, it will contribute with:

  • The digestion process.
  • Elimination of retained fluids. 
  • Swelling of the abdomen and extremities.
  • Relief of mild stomach discomfort (bloating, heaviness, gas, nausea).

Ginger Cinnamon Tea Recipe

The following recipe contains a touch of lemon juice, but you can replace it with a couple of orange slices. You could also consume it without any type of citrus fruit. As you prefer.

Ingredients

  • ½ lemon.
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 cup of water (250 ml).
  • Fresh ginger (to taste)
  • Optional: 1 teaspoon of honey (5 g).

Preparation

  • To start, wash the ginger root well and grate it.
  • Then bring a cup of water to a boil and add the grated ginger and cinnamon.
  • Let everything simmer for about 10 minutes. Put a lid on the container.
  • Meanwhile, wash the lemon and extract its juice. Reservation.
  • Turn off the heat, strain the drink, and let it cool to room temperature.
  • Add the lemon juice and strain.
  • Serve and drink in moderation.
  • In case you want to add honey, be sure to keep it in moderation. It is not recommended to add more than one teaspoon. 

* Important note: avoid consuming more than 2 or 3 cups a day.

Contraindications

  • Consult your doctor before starting to drink this drink to avoid unfavorable reactions and interactions. 
  • Although both cinnamon and ginger can help prevent various stomach conditions, their consumption is not recommended for patients with digestive disorders (and they are receiving some type of medical treatment for it), as it could be irritating in some cases.
  • It should not be consumed during pregnancy or lactation.
  • This ginger and cinnamon tea should not be given to drink to children under 12 years of age or to people who are taking any type of anticoagulant treatment (such as aspirin, warfarin, ticlopidine or heparin).
  • In case of having drunk it and experiencing discomfort, discontinue its consumption. And in case the discomfort does not disappear, go to the doctor as soon as possible for an evaluation.

Ginger and cinnamon tea, aromatic and comforting

Ginger and cinnamon tea is a very aromatic and comforting drink, which can be perfectly enjoyed in a balanced diet, in moderation. As we already mentioned, other ingredients can be added to flavor it even more, such as orange and ginger, but also honey or agave syrup.

During the winter months, there is a similar drink called Glühmost that is widely consumed in Switzerland, as it is perfect to warm up before or after skiing or doing any other outdoor sport in the mountains.

The Glühmost is prepared with ginger, cinnamon, cloves, lemon, orange, black and a touch of white wine and red tea.
